Today, Josh, Ella, and I wanted to try Lake Mary Trail up Big Cottonwood Canyon. It is in Brighton Ski Resort's territory, and up the mountain a bit from Donut Falls Trail. I should just realize that any of these hikes way up Big Cottonwood Canyon are going to have snow and ice until forever, since my family and I tried to hike Donut Falls Trail a month ago and encountered the same problem. Lake Mary Trail was better than Donut Falls in the sense that it didn't have as much ice, but it had quite a bit of snow. Ella actually sunk into a pile of snow that went up to her knees, so that was the point when we called off that hike. None of us had come prepared to encounter snow. We did a good ten minutes of the trail, though, so now we can say we have hiked at least ten minutes of Lake Mary Trail! Here is proof:
After we realized we were not prepared to trudge through snow, we drove down the canyon to Donut Falls Trail (there was, thankfully, no snow on this trail this time around). We did not have time to hike to the falls, since we all had places to be in the afternoon, but we hiked about forty minutes of it and just took in the scenery.
Ella and I had a great discussion about how young we are – how much life we have left to live. We were taking in the air, the scenery, and realizing how beautiful it is to be able to have the ability and energy to experience such amazing sights. We discussed how some people make a big deal of completing so many hikes or accomplishing certain trails, and how some view hiking as reaching to a certain point or destination. Ella and I believe it is more about the hike itself. We did not "finish" Donut Falls today. We did not get to the falls. We were okay with that. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the beauty of the nature that surrounded us.
I do not wish I were younger. I do not wish I were older. I only wish to be me, as I am – here, now, and presently.
