On Saturday, March 12th, Zach and I woke up and saw the sunshine, which made us determined to hike. We thought about hiking to the Y, but decided to do a shorter and easier hike. Someday, though, we will hike to the Y before we leave Provo! We looked on my AllTrails app and saw that Rock Canyon Trail was not too far from us, and was not too challenging. Little did we know how close we live to this canyon! The hike was 3.1 miles round trip, but I think you can keep following the trail to other destinations. We used our FitBits to calculate the distance, and turned around after 3.1 miles. However, we saw signs for other trails, so it appears that maybe you can keep going and hit other neat sights. The AllTrails app rates this hike as "moderate," but honestly, I would rate it as easy. Then again, I think "easy" in their eyes is a leveled trail, and this did have some incline to it. There was snow and ice on most of the trail, but it was not too slippery. I estimate that in two or three weeks the snow and ice will be gone...if the sun keeps shining. As I said earlier, we just turned around after 3.1 miles, so we did not arrive to a lookout point or anything. However, it was great to be in the canyon, with the sun beating down on us and being surrounded by trees. It was such a beautiful day to be alive and outside. It was sunny on the hike up, but on the hike down the clouds started to move toward us and the sky was a beautiful mix of brown and orange – beautiful, but borderline eerie. In addition, we may or may not have seen former NBA star Sean Bradley...but we cannot either confirm or deny. It would be fun to someday rock climb in this area, since there were many small cliff faces beginner climbers could practice on. Eventually, I would love to go out and practice climbing in that area! We did see an ambulance drive up the trail, though, and heard some whispers about someone falling while rock climbing. If anyone wants to venture there to rock climb, be careful – which is obviously a statement that should be said for anyone rock climbing anywhere. If you want to learn more about Rock Canyon, here is a great website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/uwcnf/alerts-notices/recarea/?recid=15123&actid=104 I would like to end this post by inviting my friends and family (and whoever else) to follow me on the app Periscope! If you do not know what Periscope is, it is an app where you can do live broadcasts and people can watch and comment to you. It is similar to SnapChat, but it is in real-time and you can have a conversation. I plan on "Periscoping" some of my hikes, so if you follow me you can check out some of the neat trails I will be hitting this summer, and you can even hike with me while sitting on you couch eating potato chips! What a fantastic world we live in! Add me: @ncole533 |
