FYI: I am very behind on posting. This post I began writing the day after I hiked Timpanogos a few weeks ago. I am just now finishing it and posting it.
Now it is time to brag. I feel like I have accomplished so much over the summer. When I started out on this hiking adventure, I honestly did not have high expectations for myself. I often get ideas like this in my mind, but they tend not to last long because I "get too busy." However, I have enjoyed hiking so much that I have made time for me to accomplish my goal. I have said this before, and I will say it again: it is not about not having enough time; it is about priority. I have made hiking one of my priorities, and it has paid off. The other night, while slathering aloe all over my crisp shoulders and legs, I noticed that I have built muscle. I am sure I will also develop skin cancer if I am not more careful, but let us just focus on the positive for now. Yes, I have built muscle, but I have built more than that. I have built confidence. I think this is the first time in a long time I have felt accomplished in something that is not work or school related. When I first began hiking this summer, I imagined doing many short hikes. I never thought I would hike thirteen miles, scaling rocks to get to the top of the fifth tallest peak in the Wasatch Range. I never thought I would hike fifteen miles to the peak of Mount Timpanogos. I actually never imagined myself doing an all-day hike at all – and I have done two!
Okay, I will get off my high horse now. I hiked Timpanogos the other weekend with Mary and Cameron, and it is now my new favorite hike! The majority of the hike is fairly easy because it is not real steep and you hike through a variety of scenery. We saw waterfalls, lots of colorful flowers, and even MOUNTAIN GOATS! (Sorry, I was very excited about the mountain goats.) We originally planned to hike just to the saddle, which provides an amazing view of Utah County, and even the Great Salt Lake, but once we reached the saddle we were informed that the climb to the peak is not too bad (at least, not nearly as bad as Pfeifferhorn). We decided to go for it, since it was only a couple more miles. I will be honest, it was a little scary and challenging, but after Pfeifferhorn anything seems doable – okay, well, anything except maybe Everest.
There are two ways to hike Timpanogos: Aspen Grove Trail and Timpooneke Trail. We took Timpooneke Trail, which is slightly longer than Aspen Grove, but from my understanding, it is not as steep. I would love to go again and do the Aspen Grove route just to see the difference. I hear the Aspen Grove Trail has more waterfalls during the spring time, which would be neat to check out.
To end this post, I will warn you that more posts are coming soon about the hikes I have taken the past couple of weeks.
