The Living Room Trail The first *official* hike I took this spring was with the lovely Mary. It was pretty awesome, since that was the first time we ever really did anything together, besides when we very first met at Nickel Mania and Karaoke Night, and there were so many people. I think the only words we spoke to each other that night were, "Hi, nice to meet you!" During this hike and bonding experience, I came to discover that not only is Mary an amazing person, she is basically a pro hiker. I tried to keep up with her the best I could. This hike is a unique one since the top of it is a bunch of "furniture" created from flat rocks. I thank whomever originally had that brilliant idea. It overlooks Salt Lake City, and is fairly short (2.7 miles total according to my AllTrails app) – which are both great aspects. However, it is pretty steep. (Okay, okay, I said I wouldn't bore you with descriptions of climbing mountains; I apologize.) Donut Falls Once upon a time (April 18th, 2015), I convinced my lovely parents that it would be a good idea to hike Donut Falls just a few days after it had SNOWED. Yep, not a good idea. (I had fun, though.) This hike is probably easy when the trail is NOT completely covered in snow, slush, and ice. There is this very steep, rocky slope one has to climb down right before the falls. Normally, it is probably doable with relative ease for the average person. However, it was sheer ice when we attempted it. We all managed to survive; although I do believe every single one of us fell trying to climb down. This hike in Big Cottonwood Canyon, I'm sure, is beautiful in the summer. We couldn't see the falls too clearly. My goal is to try it again when there is no snow or ice. It's about 3 miles total and it is not too steep of a climb, which is good news for beginners like me! To end this post, I would like to publicly shame myself for not waking up early enough to do a sunrise hike in Salt Lake City with Mary and her friend. Hopefully, next time I'll get my lazy butt outta bed! |
